Our story
The Story Behind NCC
From a family decision to a global cultural movement
The Norwegian Cultural Center (NCC) was born from a bold decision: in 2020, Jon and Olga Vikan chose to relocate from Norway to Singapore with our two young children. What started as a plan to use Singapore as a base to explore Southeast Asia turned into something much bigger when the pandemic hit and borders closed. Like many, we found ourselves unexpectedly grounded—but that pause became a launchpad.
Our children began speaking more English, and we realized we needed to actively maintain their connection to Norwegian language and culture. That’s when we discovered that Norskskolen, the Norwegian School in Singapore, was about to shut down. Jon stepped in to help, and together with former teacher Trude Giglietti-Furuseth, we revived the school. It was a grassroots effort fueled by urgency—but it sparked a bigger vision.
The Norwegian Cultural Center emerged as a natural next step: a space to preserve and share Norwegian culture in a modern, accessible way. From reviving language education to producing events, concerts, and film projects, NCC became a platform for creative and cultural exchange. We launched Borderless—our own series of curated art exhibitions—and became active in the international film scene as cultural producers and facilitators.
Over the past few years, we’ve grown from a local initiative in Singapore to an internationally connected, agile organization. We’ve hosted school programs, curated exhibitions, facilitated film shoots, run online events, and welcomed both children and adults into a deeper relationship with Nordic identity—wherever in the world they are.
NCC operates from a global perspective, but our roots are Nordic. As a privately run company, we move fast, stay lean, and collaborate across borders. Whether you’re a cultural institution, school, production team, or curious individual—we’re open to partnerships, ideas, and new ground.
